Need some new glasses?

This week I’ve been having some fun.

I’m preparing fun things to take to this years Maker Faire UK with my friends from Oomlout, who’s stall I will be helping with. This is the most exciting time of the year for Makers and I am 100% in the Makermas spirit.

First things first, we absolutely must look the part! As spectacle wearers, why not adorn our faces with glasses of our own creation. I hunt around on the internet to see what other people have tried so far.

Straight away I come across r4f who has designed these fantastic foldable wooden glasses. I’m excited by the single material idea and in particular the clever hinge joints. R4f’s glasses are designed for a small child so I set about measuring the distance between my ears and my eyes in order to adjust the design for my own larger face.

I also draw up a different shape for the front of my frames – using my own current glasses as a model. I’m very pleased with how they turn out, and with a bit more tweaking to the arm stems they fit my ears perfectly and feel relatively comfortable! The joints are a little loose so I also give the pins a little tweak – just a fraction larger – so they hold nice and tightly with no more falling out.

So next up, a new material! MDF is super cool, and probably the choice I will go with on the day – but next up I try Acrylic which turns out beautifully! The frosted arms were a mistake – trying to use up bit of leftover scrap and hadn’t realised it was from a different sheet – but I think it really makes it!

Next week I’m going to try to fit some real lenses! This could be messy – watch this space!
